Private Label vs. White Label Omega-3: What's the Difference?
Short answer: private label omega-3 is a formula developed or adapted specifically for your brand, while white label omega-3 is an existing, ready-made formula that any brand can put their label on. Both are legitimate ways to launch — the right choice depends on how differentiated you need your product to be.
I get asked this almost every week, usually by someone who has already seen both terms used interchangeably by three different suppliers. They are not the same thing, and the difference matters for your budget, your timeline and how defensible your brand will be once a competitor tries to copy it.
White label omega-3 means a manufacturer already has a formula — a fixed EPA:DHA ratio, a set dose, a standard capsule or bottle size — and sells it to multiple brands who simply apply their own label. It is fast, usually cheaper to start, and a sensible way to test a market before committing to development costs. The trade-off is that your competitor can often buy the exact same product from the same manufacturer.
Private label omega-3 starts from your specification: your target EPA and DHA levels, your preferred oil form, your dose, your flavour and packaging choices. The manufacturer builds (or adapts) a formula to match. It takes longer and usually costs more up front, but the result is harder for a competitor to replicate, and it lets you build a genuine quality or positioning story instead of a generic one.
In practice, most serious brands start with a private label approach even for a first production run, because the omega-3 category is crowded enough that "the same oil as everyone else" is not much of a brand. But if you are testing demand before investing, white label is a reasonable first step — as long as you go in with your eyes open about what you are and are not getting.
